H4 my not qualify for... 01-31-2008 09:01 AM idiotic response
thanks guys for the red dots and your flattering comments. Shows that a person cannot have an alternate point of view with regards to taxes. As I said before to eb3_nepa, with regards to taxes, its my view and mine alone. I never said it was universally fair, I just said its fair for me.
Yabadaba, i think some of those red dots may have been for your derogatory and all encompassing comments about spouses who stay at home for their kids.
Circumstances change peoples' views in life from time to time. When ur young and without kids, ofcourse you want to work and get ahead in life. However when you have a couple of kids, and dont want to send them to daycare, circumstances change. Also about the taxes, it is one thing to get unfair treatment from the system n the government and another to hear an opinion like yours from a fellow immigrant. Your statement does have a slight derogatory undertone when you say why do "my tax dollars have to be spent subsidizing people that dont work". In that case you should be against ANYONE who does not work, receiving the tax rebate. You on the other hand chose to direct ur stance strictly towards the H4s who CANNOT work, because the LAW does not allow them to.
BTW I believe this red dots and green dots is utter nonsense. It's more like a majority wins more than respect for alternate opinions.

Why are you afraid if this passes?
It will prevent FRAUD and ABUSE.
Isn't that good?
it does'nt. Thats only the title of the amendment. It puts crazy limitations and requirements on employers. Read the compete-america analysis of this. In trying to solve the problem it throws out the baby with the bathwater.
It has some nice things:
- employer must pay prevailing wage
- whistlerblower protections for H1B/L1
but some outright nasty:
- prevent subcontracting of H1Bs (that has nothing to do with fraud/abuse)
- H1 renewals or transfers require a boatload of paperwork, undue hardship to employers. Trying to hire someone on H1 woudl require as much work (if not more) than what needed to sponsor an LC.

"H-1B/immigrants depress wages" is Economics theory. Here is Greenspan's belief in this theory (from Greenspan: Let more skilled immigrants in (http://www.boston.com/business/globe/articles/2007/03/14/greenspan_let_more_skilled_immigrants_in/) Bloomberg News, Mar 14 2007)
"Our skilled wages are higher than anywhere in the world," he said. "If we open up a significant window for skilled workers, that would suppress the skilled-wage level and end the concentration of income."
Allowing more skilled workers into the country would bring down the salaries of top earners in the United States, easing tensions over the mounting wage gap, Greenspan said.
Kathleen Newland, director of the Migration Policy Institute, a Washington think tank, said she was skeptical of Greenspan's proposal. "In theory, increased skilled immigration should help contain wage rises at higher levels, but there is little empirical evidence," she said.
Here is empirical evidence against the theory for H-1B.
From pages 1 & 5 of H-1B Professionals and Wages: Setting the Record Straight (http://www.nfap.net/researchactivities/articles/NFAPPolicyBriefH1BProfessionalsAndWages0306.pdf) National Foundation for American Policy (NFAP) Policy Brief, March 2006
Research by Paul E. Harrington, associate director of the Center for Labor Market Studies at Northeastern University, shows foreign-born and native professionals earn virtually identical salaries in math and science fields. National Science Foundation data show foreign-born scientists and engineers actually earn more than natives in some fields.
A study by Madeline Zavodny, a research economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, found, H-1B workers [also] do not appear to depress contemporaneous earnings growth. As to unemployment, the study concluded that the entry of H-1B computer programmers do not appear to have an adverse impact on contemporaneous unemployment rates. The study also noted that some results "do suggest a positive relationship between the number of LCA [Labor Condition] applications and the unemployment rate a year later." Zavodny concluded: None of the results suggest that an influx of H-1Bs as proxied by Labor Condition Applications filed relative to total IT employment, lower contemporaneous average earnings. Indeed, many of the results indicate a positive, statistically significant relationship. This would mean H-1B employment is actually associated with better job conditions for natives, according to the study, which could be because H-1B professionals are complementary to native professionals.
From pages 4-5 of Driving jobs and Innovation Offshore The impact of high-skill Immigration Restrictions on America (http://www.nfap.com/pdf/071206study.pdf) National Foundation for American Policy (NFAP) Policy Brief, Dec 2007
Here is empirical eveidence against the theory for immigrants.
Dan Siciliano, who teaches corporate governance at Stanford Law School, cited recent research showing that the record immigration between 1990 and 2004 had helped to increase wages in the United States, contradicting older research that predicted the opposite would occur. He said that immigration including illegal immigration increased the wages of the native-born by an average of 1.8 percent, and by as much as 3.4 percent among 9 out of 10 native-born workers with at least a high school education.
Mr. Siciliano, a research fellow at the Immigration Policy Center, an organization affiliated with groups that support liberalized immigration, said the older studies failed to recognize that immigrants create jobs as well as fill them.
With enough immigrant waiters to staff a restaurant for lunch as well as dinner, for example, he said, the owner will make more on his capital investment and perhaps open a second restaurant across town.
Theres a divide between what we say we want from immigration and what the economy is telling us we need, he said.

The existence of two conflicting narratives about Americas education and scientific labor market, each put forward by prominent and respected scientific figures, reveals a deep discontinuity in perceptions of what is going on in science. StuckLabor -
And yeah, stop 'Dude' ing me....its kinda funny that people like you use that word without knowing the meaning of it. I am not your average Dell Dude!!!
Stucklabor, catch22,
I think that this is truly a learning experience for folks like me who do not have much knowledge about these issues. Please keep it going.
At the same time, lets not get personal here. No one has any personal grudges here and hopefully everyone realizes that everyone is stressed out with the going ons.
Catch22, I am sure that stucklabor did not mean to denigrate you when he called you dude, just as I am sure you did not mean to belittle Dell employees by claiming that you are not a average Dell Dude....trust me, I know atleast one very active member who is on this forum who has worked for Dell and is also a mensa member.
So lets stick to the topic and not make this a personal battle

Anybody has any doc + cost in the Las Vegas area?
I did it today. No appointment needed. Bloodwork+Vaccinations+exam+paperwork+Tb skin test = $160.. for child $60
address is 3375 pepper lane, Pecos and E sunset next to USCIS office.
Now the place is a little cheesy, so expect it to be like an RTO office as in India. or more like DMV as in US. :-)
If I need an xray that would be extra $50. so worse situation $210.

Individuals with valid visas are turned back every now and then for a variety of reasons. This is nothing new, and it is very rare. There is no reason to panic. A close friend of mine was turned back in 2000 when he arrived on a B2 business visa because he responded unsatisfactorily to the query "What is the purpose of your visit?". I believe he said something that alluded to the fact that he was here to execute a programming assignment, when in fact he was visiting to discuss specifications with the client to be taken back for an offshore project. This was in good economic times, when the Dot Com bubble was still around.
Incidentally, the same person is now a Green Card holder. :)
This happened even in 1998. My colleague at Tata infotech (Bangalore) was sent back immediately because of the unsatisfactory answer to "What is the purpose of your visit?" She was on B1 visa and answered something like programming.
Seems like some of the stories are bit over the top and I truly hope that they are just rumors and not real incidents.

One thing which I would like to request Immigration Voice- PR representative(s) is to send a break down of the POINT SYSTEM to conservative radio hosts like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Michael Savage, Neal Boortz, Glenn Beck, Bill O'Reilly, Bill Cunningham, Mark Levin, Melanie Morgan, and Laura Ingraham and tell them how Govt. is rewarding illegal for each year of their illegal stay in US with more points than legal immigrants who abide law. I am sure it will help kill this bill since they all are propaganda mouth pieces of people who make most noise (enough to scare their politicians)
(Few people might say that all above mentioned are conservative neo-cons and they dont want any immigration to this country, but here we might mention whats wrong with illegal amnesty rather than telling them of our plight. I believe its important to kill this amnesty bill if we dont want to see legal pushed back in lines for years).

If you really want to do some fund raising,
an Indian music concert wont be a bad idea.I know this community has people other than Indian, but for collecting money from more people, not a bad idea. A concert can be organized with may be $20 entry fee per person and everything goes to IV.
I have attended concerts of some Desi bands performing in Bay Area and they were pretty good.Music brings everyone more together than anything else.
