The iPad is not a tablet PC. You can still pay $2,000 for a tablet PC if you want. The iPad is a tablet yes, but it doesn't run a full blown deskptop OS (I'm not getting into that argument).

My point is, Apple used to offer excellent discounts to students and teachers across all of it's product ranges. It's a shame they're not offering the same with the iPad.

Who cares??? its a $500 device that can replace all computer needs of any student. Period.

I'm tired of hearing this backwater lack of imagination. Every student should have an iPad, and the great news is that most can afford one, even without "discounts".

Anyone ever consider that Apple isn't offering much of discount right now, but will at a later date, probably during back-to-school season a.k.a. once supply is high enough and demand has slowed.

Thinking more than 4 feet ahead is always good.

Realize that we are often targeted by PC users first. We are a minority, and as such we band together. Some of the group may go a little overboard, but you must understand that we have been persecuted for years. When the rest of the world gave up on Apple (remember that Wired cover with the Apple wrapped in barbed wire and the word "Pray"?), we stood fast and kept up our faith in a company that has delivered time and again.

I know I must be overtired ... I actually reached out and touched my screen to see if this was really 3-dimensional!

That made me chuckle, I've done that before myself. :)

Love it! My only qualm is how dark it is. If it had some more "pop" and was brightened up a bit I would be even more in love! Did you have lights inside that place?

Thanks! I find monitor gama really makes or breaks this one. Small changes in the can really darken it up quickly. I have printed it out at 20x30 and it really worked well in my opinion. I'm just finishing up some web site programing before I can get back into my photography. Once I do I plan on revisiting this one. I want to try printing it on both regular paper and metallic.

As for the lighthing I'm lucky I didn't break my neck that night. It was extreamly dark - no Moon and the cottages are wedged between some steep hills. I set the camera up on a tripod and took a couple of test shots for the framing. I just looked at the original images and there are only a couple of blurry images and one only lit from inside before this shot. I was using an old manual lens and must not have focused for the first couple but they were so dark it was hard to see on the LCD. (Still better than waiting for the film to develop.)

Once I had the angle I thought I wanted -- it was still hard to tell on the preview -- I set the camera for remote trigger with a three second delay. I triggered the cammera and when the shutter opened up I held a deep blue Rosco gel over a five watt LED flashlight and swept it across the front of the building a few times.

I then turned off the flashlight and dashed over the uneven ground into the room on the left. There I switched to a red gel and waved the light around the room for a couple of seconds. Then in the dark I ran around to the door and the room on the right. Here I again waved the flashlight around trying to give it an uneven wash. Then I stuck my head out the door and triggered the camera. The whole exposure was about 67 seconds.

In this shot you can see how uneven the ground was. ;)

    https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhreeB18e2dh8i2Eyu0Nc02adnSQgkgLCmACGqAFewUCL_HQvSsscgW9gPs4JBivyDcRjN25V_07_blOY5XEUTrobO9h5-4PwvUV48jtybqfJUgVFdqnbvldSY7QBwYGWNxO3qUsvJSKnE/s500/paint2.jpg

In this and another shot from that night I used way too much light. I like the uneven texture of the red and blue image. The other two are just too flat. I do like the texture of the bricks in this one but overall I ruined the shot in my opinion. In the one above you can also see that I didn't have the flashlight fully covered. There is a bit of white light spilling in the foreground.

If I were to do it again I would try putting a strobe in each room. I would need to find something to breakup the flash to get the uneven wash -- maybe some bottle partially filled with water. Then I could use the flashlight for the front lighting and maybe another strobe or two set very low for some side fill.

Overall it was a fun exercise. I had wanted to do some light painting for a long time and I got really lucky for a first try at it.

He's just speaking truth to power. It's a violent outburst caused by the man's oppression by the white majority. It's unfortunate that a woman was beat up, but we must consider the root cause - whites.

Seriously, I had to write papers on this crap. It's pretty awesome. I took it as a lesson on how you can win any argument by changing the rules.

Hahahahaha, omg, this is hysterical that you actually believe this! Racism is anything but colorblindness. Period. It doesn't matter if you're "oppressed" or the "minority". And to say that it's whites fault that a seriously misled person beat up a woman... ? HA, take a step back, pull whatever it is out of your butt, re-read your diploma, and rethink everything you think if you still agree with yourself when you posted this.

And WOW you "wrote papers"?! wait a second while I bow to me knees

Hopefully your reply was actually deeply rooted in sarcasm and I just didn't pick up on it

I'm wondering this too. I had thought it sounded cool until I got to the "I Agree" screen and saw the verbiage about making sure the info that gets pulled from your phone to Facebook is ok with your friends. I clicked "I don't agree" and decided to cone here to see what others are saying.

    Thanks.

so, even for contacts that i am not friends with, but i have an email address for it pulls their photo and makes a link under the homepage field example: fp://profile/562005566 which of course opens the facebook app when you touched.

    no other info...

No...it's NOT u/linix sorry...because "web page servers" are not the only computers in data centers!

Hum, you do understand all those big financial institutions and banks don't actually use Windows server for their big enterprise level CRMs and other important packages right ?

Unix and Linux are used for way more than just "web server". Maybe you should try working 1 day in IT before you talk about IT. ;)

Of course, you probably don't want to hear the truth and wouldn't accept it anyhow, keep believing in Windows' importance because that's what you see on the desktop, I'll keep working on real OSes in my cushy IT job far away from anything made by Redmond.

Since Apple introduced the video iPod I wondered why they didn't encourage both airlines and auto industry to add this functionality in their video devices.

Imagine having two kids in the back of the car, both with their own video screen, watching their own movie, controlling it from their own iPods.

    guess the bigger question
will this be available in coach or is this just a first class option?
Like EmPower ports they will appear in phases. First in Business and First Class and the in Coach and expect it to be in all new planes. Some Airlines (like JetBlue) may elect to put them in all seats.

OI! APPLE LAWERS!!! YEAH YOU!!! Read some Mintzberg, or Mead, or (and I'd strongly advise this) Andrew Bailey. Basically, get those HBS grads out of your org and stop using crappy outdated Business School Methods. It was once the way to go. But what they don't consider are Gender and Cultures! You wanna piss me off: You loose my custom.

Sorry for the moan, but the litigation era was over in the 90's.

It's about Love Marks now, and your Lawers are hurting your brand!!! Fix it before it's too late!

Oh, calm down and read all the links. There's been no litigation. Apple was pretty damn polite in its one cease-and-desist. Under US law, if you don't defend your trademarks you lose them, and the links discussing their trademark applications indicate that Apple may already be in trouble on that score already.

P.S. I read Mintzberg in business school in 1981. "Gender and Cultures" is a non sequiter right out of a university course catalog. ROFL. YDKWTFYATA.

Actually I got it to work in the UK by using the virtual private network feature on my iPhone. Created a 'place' last night and was able to check-in, and saw my location posted on my wall, but as I was at home at the time I deleted the post. Doesn't seem to be a straightforward way to check out, although I guess I need to play around with it a bit more.

Created a few more 'places' on the way into work this morning at various train stations and at the little park where I eat lunch sometimes. Might check-in at the stations on the way home just so that my partner (she does facebook more than I) can have fun tracking me. Don't intend to use this service as I don't really want 'friends' (which includes my boss) knowing where I am all the time .

We all know that this is just Adobe's Revenge for Apple stepping on its e-Toes with items like Final Cut Studio which for all practical purposes smacks down anything that Adobe can muster up, and for Aperature, which is not as good as it could be, but is still in the realm that Adobe used to dominate. On the audio front, I hope that this costs a lot less than Logic Express because if it's not 50% or more cheaper, this horse is dead before it leaves the gate. I mean, Logic is already cheaper than Audition, and for my money, LE does a bit more than Audition (granted I don't come even close to using the full capabilities of LE).

So maybe Soundbooth is just here to compete with Soundtrack, which is kind of dumb, as no one will be using Soundbooth on a Mac since soundbooth will not integrate with FCS the way that Soundtrack does. The more I write about it, the dumber releasing this app for the Mac sounds. I mean. . . Adobe dropped Premiere for the mac because FCP smoked it, but now they want to release an audio app for mac that probably only has a place in a Premiere workflow. Hell, maybe this is just a SoundEdit Deck 16 II!? WTF!? I'm leaving.

The one thing I would like to see in Word is a reference database and auto-format for citations so I can switch to APA or MLA style as needed. My grad school professors each have their own ideas about proper style.
    .

I couldn't agree more. There has to be a way to implement this. Though, getting the approval from APA, and MLA might be a problem. They want to sell their manuals, and this could, conceivably, cut into their sales.

Wouldn't it be lovely if the new iPhones ship with 32 gb (as the base phone) and 64 gb (as the higher capacity phone)?

    One could hope...
:DI fully expect this. With a bump for the $99 iPhone to 16 GB. There's no reason not to do this. In fact, I think it was more or less confirmed that the only reason the iPhone 4 wasn't 64 GB had to do with some kind of patent issue or supply constraints due to anticompetitive practices (I forget exactly), which made the chips too scarce for production.

As for the Expose prototype, I agree with others. I think they dumped this multitasking interface because using the App icon made more sense given screen space limitations.

The Economist, that stalwart of conservatism has this to say (http://www.economist.com/node/18620944?story_id=18620944) about the state of US transportation.

America is known for its huge highways, but ..... American traffic congestion is worse than western Europes. ....More time on lower quality roads also makes for a deadlier transport network. With some 15 deaths a year for every 100,000 people, the road fatality rate in America is 60% above the OECD average; 33,000 Americans were killed on roads in 2010.

Americas economy remains the worlds largest; its citizens are among the worlds richest. The government is not constitutionally opposed to grand public works. The country stitched its continental expanse together through two centuries of ambitious earthmoving. Almost from the beginning of the republic the federal government encouraged the building of critical canals and roadways. In the 19th century Congress provided funding for a transcontinental railway linking the east and west coasts. And between 1956 and 1992 America constructed the interstate system, among the largest public-works projects in history, which criss-crossed the continent with nearly 50,000 miles of motorways.

But modern America is stingier. Total public spending on transport and water infrastructure has fallen steadily since the 1960s and now stands at 2.4% of GDP. Europe, by contrast, invests 5% of GDP in its infrastructure, while China is racing into the future at 9%. Americas spending as a share of GDP has not come close to European levels for over 50 years. Over that time funds for both capital investments and operations and maintenance have steadily dropped (see chart 2).

Although America still builds roads with enthusiasm, according to the OECDs International Transport Forum, it spends considerably less than Europe on maintaining them. In 2006 America spent more than twice as much per person as Britain on new construction; but Britain spent 23% more per person maintaining its roads.

Americas petrol tax is low by international standards, and has not gone up since 1993 (see chart 3). While the real value of the tax has eroded, the cost of building and maintaining infrastructure has gone up. As a result, the highway trust fund no longer supports even current spending. Congress has repeatedly been forced to top up the trust fund, with $30 billion since 2008.

Other rich nations avoid these problems. The cost of car ownership in Germany is 50% higher than it is in America, thanks to higher taxes on cars and petrol and higher fees on drivers licences. The result is a more sustainably funded transport system. In 2006 German road fees brought in 2.6 times the money spent building and maintaining roads. American road taxes collected at the federal, state and local level covered just 72% of the money spent on highways that year, according to the Brookings Institution, a think-tank.

Supporters of a National Infrastructure BankMr Obama among thembelieve it offers America just such a shortcut. A bank would use strict cost-benefit analyses as a matter of course, and could make interstate investments easier. A European analogue, the European Investment Bank, has turned out to work well. Co-owned by the member states of the European Union, the EIB holds some $300 billion in capital which it uses to provide loans to deserving projects across the continent. EIB funding may provide up to half the cost for projects that satisfy EU objectives and are judged cost-effective by a panel of experts.

American leaders hungrily eye the private money the EIB attracts, spying a potential solution to their own fiscal dilemma.

The upshot is that we built too much, too fast and are unwilling to pay to maintain it although we continue to build bridges and highways (http://dc.streetsblog.org/2011/04/28/third-houston-outerbelt-would-turn-prairies-into-texas-toast/) to nowhere.

About Steve Jobs value at Apple, he did co-found the company and he is credited with turning Apple around and making it what it is today after returning. Does anyone dispute the latter?

But if that's true, then who will be able to continue to do what Jobs, if and when he'll no longer be with the company?

And what will happen to Apple without Jobs? Remember what happened the last time he left.

These are serious questions about Apple and it's future.

    Exactly.

Apple using the integrated GMA950 is a bunch of crap... They just went cheap, it has NOTHING to do with power savings. Even an old Radeon Mobility 9700 would be better. I can't understand why Apple chose to do this seeing how they don't support it with some of their own software (FCP, Motion). They should have at least offered an upgrade option or put the GPU option in the blackbook only or something.

    Exactly, spot-on correct!

The only reason Apple has graphically crippled the MBs is to force more people to buy the much more expensive, and profitable MBP, on buyers whose only need beyond a stock MB is .... a graphics chip.

Really, how much does Apple "save" by using IG vs. a cheap 64MB graphics chip .... certainly under $50. So offer it on the top-of-the-line BlackBook, and bump the price an extra $100, and it would sell through the roof, even more than it currently does. But Apple wants to squeeze every extra $$ out of its customers, so we aren't given the BTO option of a graphics chip in a MB, forcing us to spend an extra $1k for MBP, when all that many want/need is the chip.
