see this youtube video and you will be able to determine whether CPU affects the overall speed more than GPU. This guy compared 11" MBA(with 320M graphics) and 13" sandy bridge MBP with SSD(with Intel 3000HD graphics )

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qp720fEnuRs

Of course sandy bridge MBA won't use full power sandy bridge. But you will know that MBA's performance is just overpraised by SSD, not by GPU. Once other notebooks get SSD, MBA's benefit is only limited to small form factor and weight.(maybe + high resolution)

I just don't understand people overpraising 320M on MBA, this made me to join here.
Great comparison. Definitely makes me rethink my decision between a 2011 MBP and 2011 MBA. Looking forward to his comparison between those 2, that's for sure. But the higher resolution on the MBA is a huge factor for me (coming down from my current 1600x900 13in), and the 2011 MBP's is just too low IMO.

LoL they made 30billion of cuts. Ten times that wouldn't even be enough to save the US economy from absolute ruin. The Democrats are completely clueless as to the danger america is facing and even the republicans think it can be fixed by 60 billion.

The debt ceiling is the last stand for america's economy. If it is raised the total collapse of the US economy is set in stone and it will only be a matter of time.

btw Thomas Veil, your signature is actually false. It was true for some of the 2000s but even if you took all of the money from all the bankers, wall st

I'm not saying its a necessity I'm just saying Apple's curve of sales is going up while Nokia and other manufactures are losing sales with the model suggested in the article.

I'm not saying Apple couldn't pull it of, maybe they can I'm just saying I'm skeptical of this report. That's all :)

You are pulling figures out of thin-air. Where is your proof that the reason Nokia and other manufactures aren't doing well is because they have more than one type of phone?

    So riddle me this folks:

IF someone is upgraded to the latest version of Snow Leopard (which includes that 'devil-spawn' of and App Store) and Apple is ONLY going to distribute LION thru the App Store - what the hell do you do after you down load it ?

Seeing as how you cannot be running the primary OS while you are in fact upgrading it ?

OR has Apple decided to run a full blown OS Upgrade like it does it regular updates now?

Why is Apple still including DVD Drives in it's Products ? Why not just completely do away w/ them - they've done it before w/ technology ? Maybe there's a reason why the new laptops that recently came out still have those drives in them beyond just burning disks of your kids playing in a bathtub?

Maybe - Apple will bring back Tape Drives - everyone gets a 50-pound case of Tape Media w/ an install of LION (that includes a free Tape Drive) w/ a Centronix to USB adapter and they will be delivered by purple elephants. Awesome.

Oooooh - let make **** up until the last second before Apple does in fact release it's products on the world w/ an explanation of how and what they are going to do w/ said products.

It will probably be an App Store product. And it'll probably tell you to restart. When it closes down, it'll install the update, and boot back into the OS. It's not rocket science.

RFID in passports is kind of another ball of wax. One of the issues with so-called e-Passports is that they store all of the information on the RFID tag (i.e. your personal information) rather than just a reference number to a database. This is so you don't have different countries accessing other countries' databases. However, the level of encryption used on these passports is very weak, so all of that data on the tag is potentially vulnerable.

It is generally considered best practice to put only reference numbers to a database on RFID tags. That way if you skim the tag all you have is jibberish without the accompanying database info.

Don't blame the technology... blame the incorrect use of the technology. I don't see how the above examples of Apple's potential usage could be a serious privacy threat like the passports are.

E-Passports are however resilient to casual scanning (i.e the bad guy standing behind you in the queue) because you need to know personal details about the passport holder in order to generate the access key (this information is physically written inside the passport and the reader uses OCR to read it and then generate the key to access the electronic information).

There have been many unfounded stories about E-Passports, mainly by scaremongering newspapers who find the dumbest "security export" money can buy.

Yes you can duplicate the electronic portion of an E-passport with the right equipment, but what you cannot do is change this original information to create a fake passport that will pass validation, the data is signed using public key cryptography and the private keys are exactly that, private.

Providing that the authorities validate e-passport data with the authentic public keys, there is no problem and no security hole.

NOTE: the Lens has not changed it's focal length, but your image HAS changed.

Indeed. Exactly what I said above. But an EF 50mm lens has the exact same effective field of view as a 50mm EF-s lens on a crop camera. I have tested this myself using an EF 50mm f/1.4 USM prime and an EF-s 17-85mm IS USM zoom set at 50mm (as there is no EF-s 50mm prime).

I find my Samsung NC10 really very usefull indeed - I love using it. It's done all sorts of things no other machine could really do (like be powered off a car battery in the middle of a field with a USB capture card being fed by an IR camera that was pointing at a dog trap to try and find a lost dog, uploading images via 3G to the web and automatically emailing me when things changed in the F.O.V )

    2. proper keyboard? really? honestly, dude, we can debate this, but I guess it's a matter of opinion. Netbooks keyboards are too cramped up for me.

It's a LOT better than any touchpad typing. a LOT LOT better. It's not as good as a full sized keyboard, but it's good enough for most of the things most people do most of the time.

It IS larger - and it includes a webcam as well. And a microphone. and isn't glossy.

No - not really. 160Gb netbooks - <300 - that's an order of magnitude more storage than the basic iPad - for less money. You could whack a 500gb drive in for 60/$100 and still be WELL under the price of the 32 Gig iPad (without 3G)

Oh god - car analogies. the OS on a netbook isn't as pretty as an iPad - but it can do a lot LOT more.

I'm talking about my Samsung NC10 - a 10" netbook. Cheaper than a base spec iPad.

Nice work djellison, you saved me having to try and explain to the fanboys that typing on a touchscreen in no way equates to using a physical keyboard.
As Bartzilla points out there's no way the iPad will be of use to design/art students and from my own experience, med schools will have no use for them either. The list of institutions dwindles further. It's a glorified e-reader, and no amount of wishful thinking is going to change that

Are people overestimating Apple's motives? Could it perhaps not be a masterplan but just that the new motherboard, etc they are using just happens to have this component so it's been included? That could explain why it's hidden around the back. If being placed on the back is deliberate it could just be for aesthetics sake as ports on the front will look messy.

Entirely possible. If you look at this picture of the new Mini's logic board (http://s1.guide-images.ifixit.net/igi/eBGMrGURJuJjcmlh.huge) from iFixIt's teardown, it looks like the logic board is just wide enough at the front (right side of the board) of the housing to have accommodated the SD card slot. But it looks like it would have been at the expense of either growing the housing so an inserted card sat flush with it, or having the card stick out significantly (and asymmetrically) from the rounded corner.

I really don't get why people who come up with specs don't think ahead. When SD came out it has a 2GB limit. So they updated it, SDHC for a 32GB limit. Now they had to update it again, SDXC for a 2TB limit. They should have just designed the format to scale in the FIRST place.

For example: CompactFlash came out in like 1994 and has scaled all the way up to like 137GB, when the first cards were under 1MB.

Fair point. It could have been a cost-driven design decision to keep the cost of the driver silicon down, similar to those that drove the design of the original USB 1.0 specification.

    With regard to booting:
I think a lot of people in here are also looking over the fact that the card reader is on the USB bus. Meaning the speeds you'd be limited to would be that of USB 2.0. Internal 5400rpm boot drive would still be faster.

The card reader doesn't show up on the Mini's USB device tree in System Profiler, hence is not a USB device. The USB device tree lists every device that is currently enumerated on the bus.

I believe its part of the ethernet controller chip.

Correct. Looking at the BCM57765 block diagram, the SD card data is accessed via the PCI Express bus. The SMBus is several orders of magnitude too slow to handle 2.5GT/s, and is likely used for controlling the driver IC.

Well windows for killing is one thing, Microsoft are well known to be evil but mac for killing? Either way I don't care what the end use is if the US army take apple on i'll be put of buying Apple stuff. It's purely political!
So I guess you will just live off the land from now on to grow your own cotton for clothes vegetables for food? You will abandon all technology including the internet (originally a military project).

    http://www.darpa.mil/

As much as it pains me to say this, I agree with kdarling. Virtually every product you consume and every technology you use on a daily basis is also used by the US military and/or was originally invented for military use. Google maps was funded by the CIA when it was called Keyhole.

Have fun living off the grid.

I'm a *total* Apple fan. I love everything from my MBP, iPhones, iPads....but the Xoom is a *damn* good device. I mean, seriously good.

It's not ready for the masses yet, but if you know even the slightest about tech (in its use, not in more technical aspects), it *really* is a superior device at the moment.

There are a few software quirks, but a sw upgrade or two and those are gone. Besides, the list of "quirks" in iOS/iPhone OS is still large :).

I own all of them and by business develops & deploys our services for the iOS platform, but the Xoom was given to me to convince me to port at least a UI of our backend service to the Android by a partner - and I'm *VERY* impressed by where the Android 3 platform and the Xoom is going. Enough to consider putting dev resources towards building an Android port.

Apple better watch out, they're flying high and iPad 2 is good, but Consumer Reports is right, the Xoom is good, and it won't take much more to make a good competitor. iPad 3 and iOS 5 better be a *huge* leap forward (and shed some of this Jobsian hubris he has from his ego, I love the guy and what he's accomplished, but his ego gets in the way sometimes, and I see it becoming more and more troublesome for AAPL).
Ever since Android was released on phones I have been hearing that it "is just a release or two away from being a great OS". The reality is that most Android devices are extremely lucky if they get one upgrade ported to them by their carrier. I'll stick with an iPad2 rather than buying something and hoping that it improves with time.
